Born Bertram Martin Adams in England in 1879, poet and author Bill Adams served as a sailor from 1897 to 1901 before moving to California in 1904 and publishing his first story. Best known for his writing about the sea and sailors, he was the recipient of many awards, including several O'Henry Memorial Awards. Bill Adams died at his home in Dutch Flat, California on March 12, 1953.
